Great Missenden Photographer

I have lived in Great Missenden area all of my life.

I have added some history of Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire

Great Missenden is a large village in the valley of the River Misbourne in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire between Amersham and Wendover. It closely adjoins the villages of Little Missenden and Prestwood.
Little Kingshill was where i was first brought up. There used to be a garage in Great Kingshill which, has now been turned into houses.
The narrow High Street is bypassed by the main A413 London to Aylesbury Road. The source of the Misbourne is to be found just north of the village, although the upper reach of the river runs only in winter and the perennial head is in Little Missenden.

Great Missenden lay on a major route between the Midlands and London and several coaching inns, particularly the Red Lion (now an estate agents) and The George (which still exists) but has just closed this month. It used to provided rest and refreshment for travellers and their horses. The first railway line in the area was, however, routed alongside the Grand Union Canal to the east. Once the coaches stopped running Great Missenden declined in importance and prosperity, becoming an agricultural village. Following the arrival of the London Underground Metropolitan Line in 1892, Great Missenden became a commuter village for London with writers, entertainers and even Prime Ministers (chequers) among the passengers. Great Missenden railway station is now on the Chiltern Railways line and offers services running into London Marylebone.

The village is overlooked by the medieval parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul. Its position away from the village suggests an earlier settlement round the church with a move to its present location in the early Middle Ages. In the twelfth century Great Missenden was granted a charter allowing it to hold an annual Fair in August. The fair hasn't been held for many years, Missenden Abbey, founded in 1133 as an Augustinian monastery, was ruined following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the remains were incorporated into a Georgian mansion which is now a conference centre.

Gipsy House in Great Missenden was the home of author Roald Dahl until his death in 1990, and many local scenes and characters are reflected in his work. Roald Dahl is buried at Saint Peter & Saint Pauls Church and children still leave toys and flowers at his grave. Great Missenden was also temporarily home to Robert Louis Stevenson, the writer of the world famous book Treasure Island, and is currently home to actor Geoffrey Palmer, and his wife Sally.

In June 2005 the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre opened in Great Missenden to honour the work of Roald Dahl.

The village is home to the Gateway School, Great Missenden Church of England Combined School and The Misbourne secondary school.
The White Lion in the high street is being converted into a wine bar and should be open spring/summer 2009.

The below photograph was taken in Great Missenden High Street last year with a model.

A little something about Kings Langley

History of Kings Langley

Kings Langley is a large village, situated in the Gade Valley and is of significant historical interest. It is just over the canal from Nash Mills, both villages follow the canal from Hemel Hempstead towards London.

The name "Langley" derives from "Langelei"; a long meadow or clearing.
Edmund de Langley, the first Duke of York and fifth son of Edward III, was born in the Royal Palace (built under the supervision of Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I), in 1341. His tomb and that of his first wife Isabel of Castile is contained in the very attractive All Saints Church, which in turn is adjacent to the tranquil Village Garden.
During the Black Death of 1349, the Royal Palace was used by Edward III as his seat of government. Sadly the palace is no longer standing.
Until 1935, the village historically held an important royal prerogative, the right to fly the Royal Standard.
Today, the village has a population of almost 6,000. It has a thriving High Street with many and varied shops offering a wide range of goods and services.
Situated in close proximity to the M25, Kings Langley also has good rail links with London. The Grand Union canal, which reached the village in 1797, forms the border with Abbots Langley to the East.
The village has a library, community centre, primary and seniors schools, two doctors surgeries and a retained fire station.
On the sports front, the village has an active bowls club and its cricket and football clubs have recently completed new modern facilities.
The village also has many community groups and societies and every June stages the annual carnival on its common. For many years until his death, Kings Langley was the home of renowned jazz musician and radio presenter Benny Green.

A little something about Hemel Hempstead

History of Hemel Hempstead

The High Street has a community atmosphere and is a unique shopping experience featuring many speciality shops and services. Visitors and can soak up the Victorian, Georgian and Tudor architecture in a street described as “the prettiest street in Hertfordshire”.

The Old Town of Hemel Hempstead boasts a diverse selection of specialist shops including fine art, antiques, gentleman’s outfitters, dolls houses, quality giftware, furniture, Christian book shop, angling supplies, soft furnishing, bicycles, estate agents and hair and beauty salons.

You can also drink in the atmosphere of the Old Town in any of the period pubs and enjoy the varied menus that cater for all palates in the numerous restaurants, bistros and cafes along the High Street.

The town of Hemel Hempstead has much to offer its many visitors and is a great family friendly place to shop. The town centre has all the major High Street stores you'd expect of a busy modern town as well as a Debenhams Department Store.

At the end of the Marlowes, just past Marks & Spencer, you can walk straight through into Riverside, the new shopping development with Debenhams and many other new stores. Road access can be gained via The Plough (‘Magic’) Roundabout to the Riverside 350 space car park.

Hemel's outdoor market is located in the centre of the Marlowes, along the pedestrianised area. For fruit & veg, clothes and household goods, the general market is on Thursdays and Saturdays. Alternatively, Wednesday's antiques market is always popular with those in search of a bargain.

A little something about Nash Mills

History of Nash Mills

Nash Mills is a very old settlement, the village and the local mill both have the same name, Nash Mills. It means the mill by the ash tree and came about by the erroneous division of the Middle English atten ash.

In the medieval court rolls, Le Ashmill and Nashmyle are mentioned. Originally the mill was used for grinding corn and in the late 17th century it was converted from corn milling to paper making, which at the time was a hand process and remained so until John Dickinson (hence Dickinson Quay)came on the local scene, acquiring Apsley Mill in 1809 and Nash Mills two years later.

John Dickinson was hard working and inventive. He patented thirteen inventions concerned with paper making and his enterprise John Dickinson and Company prospered. In 1836 he built his country house in Nash Mills and called it Abbot's Hill. It is now a private school. He was the founder of Nash Mills school "built for the benefit of his apprentices and the young people of the village".
The John Dickinson site was recently sold, nearly 200 years after John Dickinson first arrived on the scene, and is being re-developed as a marina and housing complex. There are approximately 1750 people on the electoral register for Nash Mills.

The Paper Trail project is an industrial 'exploration' centre built around an historic, fully working paper mill. It offers public access into the heart of a real working environment and is complemented by an active business & industrial enterprise hub. The Paper Trail

Ten Top Modelling Tips

1. Make sure your on time, if you cannot, be let the Photographer or agency know. Punctuality is very important."safety tip": If you are not taking anyone with you to the shoot, let someone know where you are and with whom.

2. Always go prepared :- ie clothing changes, don't always think that they will have everything that is needed for the shoot.

3. Always take your own make-up, even if they has told you there will be a make-up artist there. Always think of the could be's.

4. Get references, as many as you can. That would include other models and/or assignments that the photographer has had. Check and double check be sure that a legitimate photographer is doing the same with you. Never take anything for granted.

5. Get phone numbers and addresses if possible, if they are hesitant. You might want to rethink.

6. Make sure that you know exactly what the shoot consists of never feel pressured to do anything that you feel uncomfortable doing.

7. Always take along enough "cash" for cab fare etc. In case the photographer cannot provide adequate transportation. Most will!

8. Keep in mind that modelling is a business, not a personal venture. You need to be prepared to negotiate with prospective employers, regarding everything from pay to content. Don't just drop out of contact because you don't like what's offered - either negotiate or say, "Thanks, but no thanks." You never know, the employer you turn down could well have your dream job later - and if you treat him or her rudely or with disrespect, you'll likely miss out.

9. Don't ever do anything that you might regret later. What you do today can affect your career later down the road. "If you pose for a photo that you cannot show your family and friends, and be proud of it, it wasn't worth doing".

10. If you have a verbal or signed agreement on travelling expenses etc, make sure that it is followed up on.

Modelling Tips, How To Become A Model

Are you ready?

Despite the glamour and hype you have seen about the modelling profession, it's hard work. It's boring (sometimes) and it can be tedious. Prepared to be constantly rejected, get ready for some major ups and downs. Modelling is a lifestyle, not an 9-5 job.

Are you willing to put the time and energy into competing with pretty much everyone you meet, 24 hrs a day?

You'll need a modelling portfolio, I'm sure you'll all know what one of those is but for those that don't it's basically a selection of pictures showing yourself in different outfits and poses. Make sure you get a variety of different looks such as swimwear, catalogue and lingerie, you get the idea, also get a couple of black and white shots in there. Avoid using pictures of the same shot.
It can be very advantageous to have photographs from different photographers in a portfolio.

Before going ahead with a photo shoot ask to look at the photographers portfolio to see if you like his photography. No doubt if you go to the photographers studio to book the appointment he will have examples of his work on display anyway. Avoid photographers wanting to take nude shots.

The Agency

GOLDEN RULE - Don't go with an agency who asks for money up front! You'll probably never hear from them again and I certainly doubt you'll ever get any work from them.

More modelling tip and photography news to come soon.
